This one day tour to
Petrified Forest/Painted Desert and Meteor Crater
travels through the tall forests surrounding the mountains of Flagstaff down to the high desert of Arizona. Your guide will share info about the volcanic activity of this area many, many years ago and point out volcanic vents and cones. You'll also learn about the prehistoric people that inhabited this area, as well as the Navajo people living here today. We'll bring you to Arizona's
Meteor Crater where a giant meteor impacted the earth millions of years ago, and where past astronauts trained for space missions. At Meteor Crater the Visitors Center provides you with an enjoyable educational experience in well-maintained, modern facilities. The former Museum of Astrogeology has been remodeled and includes new displays on the never-ending process of impacts and collisions in our solar system. The Meteor Crater Interactive Learning Center includes 24 exciting exhibits, making it a great educational, fun and informative visit.
Afterward, you'll visit the combined National Parks of
Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. Here, you'll enjoy a walking and driving tour of this geologic phenomena. Petrified Forest was set aside as a national monument in 1906 to preserve and protect it's scientific value. Learn how this giant forest was turned to stone and enjoy views of the colorful Painted Desert cliffs as they change hue throughout the day. You’ll also see
ancient petroglyphs and the ruins of prehistoric Native American dwellings.
